One thing I do love with soundforge editing is zooming in and out of waveform with mouse wheel. Audition is a great editor that i use a fair bit for processing, effects and clean up but soundforge is my most used and prefered when just doing a lot of detailed sample chopping and fade in fade outs to stop clicking.

I also like its ability to set its sample rate to any number i choose if i want to do quick time and pitch shifting.

If the pro version used a similar zoom with mouse wheel and audio extraction, i'd likely not need to use soundforge.

Haven't used too many of those, but I do like Adobe Soundbooth (latest version was in CS5, was replace by Audition) and Audacity.x

Maybe sounds a little strange, but i always edit my samples etc in my DAW (bitwig)
And then i resample a lot...

So thats the reason i use Image line Edison. (because of drag and drop feature also)
Put it on a track hit rec and go.. when finished cut normalize etc and drop it in my DAW.

Edit: it,s a VST and a standalone product.

I would also add Edison - cool since it also exists as VST so you can directly record, edit and then play back in sync.
I also find Ocenaudio quite interesting, especially GUIwise - and it handles multichannel audio.

But my main editor is Audition 3 (I also have 5.5 but that's a major failure IMO) - I use it since I bought Cool Edit on a floppy via Compuserve in the pre-Internet times, then Cool Edit Pro and finally Audition...

Recently I started using Audacity much more, since it handles Surround/Multichannel, FLAC and AC3 much much better than any of my other tools. While it feels a bit clumsy, it's quite capable.

DAW-wise Bitwig is my main software together with Usine Hollyhock 2.

Previously I had been using Soundforge as a file-based editor from about 1996 till I started having major problems with v11 around 2009/10. I found Twistedwave (OSX only) and I was so happy with this editor I dropped Soundforge all together. Twistedwave is incredibly stable and has excellent core features like plugin chains and batch audio processing. I stopped doing any file based editing in Windows after that.

Funny, one of the reasons I bought Resonic Pro is because it allows to select and "slice" a piece of a sample, then drag and drop that selection directly into my DAW (Ableton).

I tried several of the listed tools on the poll, and none could do that simple action.

I actually use Resonic as the selected "external editor" in Live.

Beyond slicing I can also easily browse the other samples of that sample's folder.

Or, perhaps a right-click presents a drop-down list of multiple user-specified applications. Other sample management applications I've used work this way, though I'll confess I experienced some debilitating sound card sharing issues that stumped the developer throughout my evaluation period. The only way to edit in Wavelab, for example, was to close the calling app, which made things tedious, to say the least.

I'll be happy to test this for you, when it comes time, if it will help.

First off, the soundcard sharing issues will be fixed in 0.9.3 due by the end of this month, with additional options incoming as well.
