I figured it out: you need to double-click on the selected file, the selection won't go away and you can listen to it.

Open Folder main menu entry

If I have a path copied to the clipboard, I can't simply open the folder. I need to select a specific file, which takes more time. Navigating an unfamiliar file tree to find the correct file can also be time-consuming.
