Just for the sake of completion, I have found out why Potplayer is louder than other players. Deep in its preferences, in the Audio section, a radio button is checked for the option "normalize". Associated with this is another checked option, "boost audio".

Yes, I considered the placebo effect, but there was an identifiable difference in loudness. Making sure, I found the "orban loudness meter", just to make sure, and tried again with a different file, a wave file I had ripped from vinyl, so I knew its history. Greetings all, my first post, and I'm very happy to have found this software.
